Being a college student isn’t always easy as some people make it out to be. With the tasks of completing assignments and attending lessons, carrying out your own research and so on, the last thing you want to be doing is having to take a part-time job to pay off your student loan. Did you know that you can make money online as a college student? Read this review where I list 20 ways you can make money online as a student.
Go Work From Anywhere
The beauty about working online, is that you can work from anywhere following these work ideas so even if you’re in a pub chilling out, or on a half-term break, you can be earning an income.
What you do now as a side hustle, may well turn into a long-term income stream which you can live off into your retirement.
Bear this in mind as you read my ’20 ways to make money online as a college student’ post.
1.Take Online Surveys
Are you the type of student that likes to give your opinion on current trends and issues knowing that what you say can make a difference? Then, you are the ideal candidate for taking surveys. You can complete them when you have a few spare minutes during a break or in between your classes. The payout isn’t as lucrative as a part-time job however, you can still earn extra pocket money which does add up over time.
2.Start A Blog/Your Own Website
This is a great way to generate passive income. Your blog can pave the way to a very lucrative business well after your college years so that you don’t have to work until your twilight years. Leading up to your retirement, if you start your blog now, you could be earning passive income that will enable you to do the things you want to do when you want.
It takes less than 30 minutes to create a website – check out my “How To Start A Blog” post here – there is a multitude of ways to get people coming to your blog for free. I’m sure you’ve heard of Twitter, FaceChat, Facebook and all the other Social networks that are out there. Use these to promote your blog.
Making Sense of cents is just one example of a successful website started by Michelle Schroeder-Gardner at college. She was able to pay off her student loan of $38,000 in 7 months. Her blog now provides a full-time income for her.
Your blog doesn’t have to stop when you finish college. Think of it as the start of your ‘Go Work From Anywhere’ journey.
3.Start A YouTube Channel
YouTube is a very popular media source as more and more people are now watching videos, so it’s a great revenue earner if you can create a video that can go viral and earn a profit from it. YouTube now has a referral program which you can collect a percentage of the avenue revenue per 1000 views.
Sign-up to this programme is through your YouTube account. Details on how to sign up can be found here.
You can make a lot of money with a popular YouTube channel and if you search the internet, you can find many successful stories of YouTubers making it their career.
For this task, I would set up a free dedicated Gmail account to keep it separate from your other main email account.
You could be getting lots of emails from the organisers of competitions so it’s easier to sift through these emails when they are separate from a private email account.
There are no guarantees that you will hit the jackpot by entering competitions. I’ve heard where people have won watches, tickets to gigs and even some chocolate. There are people that do this as a full-time job who earn up to £50,000 a year through all sorts of competitions. Competitions range from simple registration forms to answering questions correctly over the phone.
5.Become A Virtual Assistance
Do you have a creative streak in you or are you great are organising or dealing with technical issues? As a virtual assistant, you can assist clients from your dorm.
You can work with multiple clients charging them hourly rates which can add up. Ther are many businesses hiring virtual assistants as it saves them a huge amount of money by paying for the service rather than paying someone a monthly wage so this is where you can set your payment amount.
6.Gigs On Fiverr
Fiverr is a great place for you to market your skills. It is one of the largest marketplaces for people to make money selling services known as gigs. Your services can be anything from creating a logo, writing an article, voiceovers to teaching. As a student, you can utilise your writing skills by writing articles for others and earn while you do so.
Even though the default price is $5, you can attach extra services to a gig to make more money. So, for example, you can combine a logo with creating an article. You can even use the services in Fiverr by replying to jobs on Upwork – which pays more. So find a decent designer on Fiverr, then reply to jobs on Upwork to make a profit.
Check out Fiverr here, there are lots of great stuff which may inspire you to join.
7.Manage Social Media Accounts
Social media is a great way for companies and individuals to increase brand awareness and fan following.
Do you love using Social Media? This may be up your street.
When you see a famous person tweeting or posting a picture on Instagram, do you think they are doing this themselves? Some may but I guarantee you that most of them will hire a freelancer to manage their social media accounts on their behalf.
So if you’re a big Social Media fan and have nailed the art of posting the right content to get more likes, retweets, loves and so on, you can manage social media accounts for others.
However, this isn’t as straightforward as it seems.
The wrong tweet could bring a swift and sudden end to your job. This is a really high-pressure job and you may want to approach local companies who have no technical know-how on social media and posting an incorrect link is not going to cause an outburst all over the internet.
Have you got exceptional writing skills but don’t want to get involved in anything technical? Then content writing may be the thing for you.
Many bloggers love the technicalities associated with blogging but they don’t have the time to write content regularly. You can provide a service to them.
In addition to this, you can also work with agencies to write content for clients.
You can find opportunities for content writing projects through Facebook groups and LinkedIn. Some bloggers will let you use your name as the author of the post while others will want you to be a ghostwriter. If your name appears as the author and you’ve written a great piece, this can lead the way to more work coming your way.
The pay differs, depending on your skills and the content you’ll be writing for. Research-based articles are priced higher. However, you can expect to earn between $5 to $50 per 1000 words.
Sign up to Mindsumo and exchange your ideas for cash!
The challenges are a great way to connect and share your ideas with blue-chip companies like Not only that, this real-world project experience is something that you can add to your resumé as it makes use of problem-solving skills and shows creativity.
You never know, one of the challenges may even trigger light-bulb moments for some of your assignments.
This is one of my favorite ‘make money online’ task as you gain valuable skills such as research and problem-solving.
There are a ton of apps that you can review and be paid to do so. AppCoiner is such an app. You are paid when the app that you test and review is purchased through your own website. If you have a blog, then this is a great way to promote apps that you have tested to friends, family and visitors to your website.
11.No Risk Match Betting
This is one of the quickest ways to make risk free and tax free money by a taking advantage of free bets offered by betting sites through ‘matching’ them at a betting exchange. This method gets rid of the risk as you are betting both for and against a certain outcome.
You can earn as much as £100 and if you times this amount by the number of betting sites there are you can see how easy you can come away with a great profit.
Check out this guide here for more information on match betting.
12.Pay To Print
Check out the platform
It pays you to print ads along with your documents! Have you got a handful of documents you want to print? Use Freenters.
The way it works is that ad pages are inserted on the first page and then after every fifth page of the document you print with Freenters. For each ad page, Freenters pay you 40 cents.
As you are always printing documents, why not make use of this passive income source? the pay rate is pretty high so if you were to print a 50-page document with 11 ad pages, that’s $4.4!
Some of the ad pages contain deals and coupons so you can make a saving here too.
13.The ‘Disney’ Vault Secret
Money made here isn’t readily available however, the Disney Vault is good for you because you can buy a Disney classic at a reasonably low price, and then sell it on at a much higher price at a later date.
You can make huge profits by buying classics such as ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and make back three times the price paid for it. Not all the classics are in the vault and not all will turn out to be a great money spinner.
However, you can’t go wrong with Disney. If no one buys it now, hang on to it. You never know what the future holds. Disney never goes out of fashion and I’m sure there will be some ardent Disney fans out there waiting for that old Disney classic to add to their collection.
14.Paid To sites (Swagbucks)
Swagbucks is not only a great site to earn money from by taking surveys, you can also get paid while you shop online. Sign up for an account here and start saving and earning when you make your online purchases from partner websites.
15.Become An Affiliate Marketer
Affiliate Marketing is big business with relatively low start-up costs. You can start your business while you are in college and it can last a lifetime earning you passive income. Check out my #1 recommendation to get you off on the right foot with this ‘make money online’ venture.
16.Become A Clickworker
Clickworker.com advertises tasks that businesses need completing quickly. These tasks can range from data entry to form filling. You are paid in cash (via PayPal). This can be a nice little earner, earning you easy money when you choose to work.
17.Review Music For Money
What doesn’t student like music?
Why not review unsigned bands and artists for cash with Slicethepie? It does take a while to make a decent income but you can make up to £40/month and with the other make money online opportunities, this can add up.
18.Sell Your Books
You can earn more selling your book using BookScouter than selling your used textbooks back to the college.
BookScouter will show you the highest price you can sell your book for. You can use this price as a guide to then sell on other marketplaces like Amazon if you have a seller account or you can sign up to BookSocuter where you package your books and mail them for free using the service.
This service is only available if you live in the USA.
Amazon marketplace is your next best bet as you can check out prices and sell your book at the same price or lower to make a sale. With Amazon marketplace, you will need to pay for the shipping of the book. However, you can add this to the price.
Another name for this is Multi-Level Marketing. With this business, it allows you to make money by selling products and recruiting other members who go on to sell. There are different markets such as health and consumables. This is a great way to make money especially if you have a lot of friends and contacts who you can introduce to the scheme.
With network marketing, you may need to pay a small fee for the initial sign up and you may need to hold inventory. However, these days Network Marketing is becoming more advanced with the promoters setting up your own personal website and holding stock in warehouses. All you have to do is direct people to your website to make a purchase. You can again use social media to advertise your site. Many people are now making a decent living from network marketing.
You can earn at least $10 per hour. You can help high school students in subjects such as Maths, Foreign languages, English and so on. You can advertise your services online through different websites by setting up a user profile.
No More Excuses!

There is no simple formula to make money online. The amount of revenue you can earn with these money making ideas will vary depending on the time and effort you’re willing to invest.
Not all of them are weighed the same in terms of the amount you can make; some will earn you pocket money where the tasks can fit in and around your breaks; others are longtime investments – such as Affiliate Marketing, which you can make money online now as a college student but it can also take you beyond your college years into retirement.
