Many people start blogging because they want to express themselves, provide helpful information, share ideas and make money.

No matter what your goals are for wanting to blog, if you want to become a successful blogger, you need to start off on the right foot and have the support of others who have the expertise so you can avoid common mistakes that I made – mistakes that I don’t want you to make.

I’ve put this post together to help you get off to a great start on your blog!

Before we get going, I’ve answered a few questions that you may have about blogging and blogs.

What Is A Blog?

what is a blog

A regularly updated website or webpage, typically run by an individual or a small group that is written in an informal or conversational style.

A blog is usually specific to a common niche and is frequently updated with new content.

Typical blog posts contain text,  videos, images, bullet-points, different sized headings, media and links.

Why Do People Blog?

why do people blog

Everyone has something to share and a blog is an ideal way to do this.

My blog is about helping people by providing useful information and tools that they can use to become successful online with their blog.

I blog as I love to write about things that interest me and it is another source of income.

If you want to become a blogger to make a living from it, you can.

Blogging is a life changer.

You are not limited to what you can blog about.  Whether it’s an animal lover blog where you share information about your pet, a diet blog sharing the latest low-calorie recipes, or a blog evaluating product reviews, the choices are limitless.

Top 10 Reasons Why People Blog

  • To improve writing skills
  • Increase self-confidence
  • To create a record
  • To connect with like-minded people
  • To gain knowledge

There are many FREE hosting sites out there that you may have used in the past or may even consider using such as Blogger, Wix, Weebly, Penzu, SquareSpace etc. however,  if you want to make money from your blog and work for yourself doing what you are passionate about with a professional online presence, I suggest you pay for your hosting and connect to BlueHost.

By connecting to BlueHost, you will also get a FREE domain!  So rather than having a website name like IAmNewToBlogging.wix you can have IAmNewToBlogging.com.  Which one looks better and shouts authority?   I think you will agree with me that the .com domain name is better.

If a .com domain isn’t available, try to get a .org or a .net domain name.   Use the tool below to check for availability.

Also, many of these free sites:
Do not offer support.
The domain name is pretty generic as you can see.
The search engines won’t think you are serious.

You don’t know who the people are behind these sites and your site can be taken down on a whim.  Imagine that.  All that hard work of yours gone in a flash.

The cheapest often becomes the dearest (most expensive)

With Bluehost, you can run your own brick and mortar Online business.  With Blogger and the other FREE hosts, you are limited to what you can do.  They are for people who just want to write about their passion and are not interested in making any money.

  3. This is such a wonderful article about blogging! I’ve researched several, and you really have a great way of explaining what exactly it is to write a blog and how to go about it. thank you so much for taking the time to share your wealth of information with all of us!

  4. Hi Jackie

I really like your site and posts.

I wish I saw it when I started creating my blog. It is very informative and introduces the reader to the world of blogging in a nice and not too intimidating way. My favourite is the 10 Top Reasons why People Blog.

There are times when the information provided out there is inadequate, incomplete, confusing or over whelming. Yours brings a fresh of breath air and makes a pleasant reading.

I also agree in choosing the best domain and hosting provider. Cheapest is not always the best as you will pay for it at some stage later on. It is better to go with a reputable company that offers reliability and first class service as BlueHost does.

    Keep up the good work.

    • Thanks for your kind words Rabia.
When I wrote this post, I already had my domain name from a provider that were offering it at a really low price. I thought great. My renewal recently came up and the domain name was nearly 3x as much what I originally paid – I couldn’t believe it! I thought they had made a mistake or they were charging me for both hosting and the domain. When I checked with them, it was just for the domain renewal … the cheapest often becomes the dearest. What I now do is shop around when it comes to renewal and move my domain name to somewhere else – after all, it’s just a container – why do they charge so much!

It’s never too late to update your blog – there is so much good information out there. Just keep looking and researching.
Wishing you success with your blog
