What is Swagbucks?

Swagbucks is one of the largest rewards and loyalty shopping site on the web.

By taking surveys, playing games,  watching videos, shopping offers, free trials, making charitable donations and lots more activities you can earn Swagbucks (SB).  These Swagbucks points can be redeemed for cash or a variety of gift cards, including ones for restaurant chains and popular retailers such as Amazon, PayPal, Marks and Spencer, and Walmart.  So as you can see, you can make money with Swagbucks.

Swagbucks also has a Rewards store where you can spend your points.

Gift cards vary in SB cost, which could mean putting in more time to earn the required Swagbucks points.

Signing Up To Swagbucks

Signing up is free and fairly straightforward.  All you need is an email account OR, if you have a Facebook account, you can use that to sign up.

Just by signing up, you earn 2 Swagbucks points! A list of point-earners seen below is what you will be presented with when you sign up to Swagbucks.

Some Points Come Easy

Below, I list some of the points you can earn as part of the sign-up process:

  • Verifying your email address – 4 SB points
  • Creating a Profile – 50 SB points!
  • Installing the Swagbucks toolbar – 2 SB points
  • Setting up your security question-  2 SB points
  • Adding the Swag button to your browser 50 SB points!

A total of 108 points earned in less than 5 minutes!

How Do I earn my bucks

Browsing the Net

By registering and using their search engine – through the SwagButton – instead of Google or Yahoo, you can earn Swagbucks that can be redeemed for gift cards and merchandise.

Is Swagbucks worth my time

If you make Swagbucks your default search engine you can make money without doing anything extra or special.

Online shopping on the Swagbucks website

Your favourite stores are also showcased in Swagbucks;  Topman, Argos, The Body Shop, Just Eat, H Samuel, Lego and Marks and Spencer are just a handful of stores you can not only earn Swagbucks but you can receive cash back!

With the SwagButton browser extension installed, you will get alerts about new earning opportunities even when you are not on the Swagbucks site.

So, you can be working away on your PC and see the alerts pop up.  OK, this may be annoying for some people however, you can switch the alerts off and switch them back on when it is convenient to do by moving the toggle button within the settings menu of the SwagButton – click on the SwagButton, then click settings and toggle the ‘Survey Alerts’ switch.

Playing Games and watching videos

By shopping online at your favourite store, through the Swagbucks search engine,  filling in some surveys, playing games a few times a week, you can easily earn Swagbucks points!

Taking Surveys

You can choose surveys that you wish to participate in.  Each survey will show the time it’ll take to complete and the amount of Swagbucks you can earn. You will earn Swagbucks based on the time it takes; the less time it takes for a survey to complete, the lesser Swagbucks you will earn.  Each survey rewards between 1 SB and 1000 SB’s.   Most surveys are primed for the USA and Canada so if you are outside of these countries, you may see a limited amount of surveys.

These are the most popular ways to earn your Swagbucks.

There are other ways such as reaching your daily goal.

By activating your daily goal, you have set goals such as ‘Earn 30 SB and get 3 SB’.  This daily goal is something you activate.

There are also special offers and swag codes that you have to look out for on the Swagbucks Social Media platform.  If you find a Swag code, enter it in on your Swagbucks profile and you earn Swagbucks points.

As you can see, there are MANY ways to earn Swagbucks.

Swag conversion rate (Jan 2018)
170 SB = £1/$1
850 SB = $5/$5

Each Swagbuck is worth one penny in real-life currency.

Is Swagbucks Worth Your Time?

I think Swagbucks is a fantastic program and worth your time, especially if you do most of your shopping online as you’re not really going out of your depth doing something else, you’re just changing the way you shop online by using a different search tool.

With the wide range of stores and merchants, there is something for everyone. You can be earning points for trial offers, making a donation and so on.

Not only that, when you need to let your hair down, you may find playing a few games will help gain you some Swagbucks for no effort – just you having a bit of fun and being rewarded for doing so.  Isn’t that just great?

You may be the sort of person who loves to take surveys and want to do this full-time.   Surveys really do help with creating initiatives and implementing strategies so I personally look at completing surveys as helping a wider cause, not just to earn a Swagbucks or two.

You can really make a difference in the lives of others if the right survey comes your way by sharing your opinion to help market researchers improve new products and services while getting loads of SB.

So yes. I would say Swagbucks is worth the time – you earn just by doing something different.

What I like about Swagbucks

  • It’s free.
  • It’s easy to use.
  • It doesn’t get in your way – if you turn of Survey Alerts.
  • It’s online – so no steep learning curve
  • There is an APP for it –  so you can earn points on the go – just search for Swagbucks in Google Play or the App Store and download!

Amazon and Swagbucks

Amazon is a well-known brand online.  All your online shopping needs can be met through shopping on the Amazon website.

Did you know that you could earn 130 SB just by signing up for their Amazon Prime 30-day trial?

I’ve previously signed up to Amazon Prime on the Amazon website, losing out on 130 SB!Is Swagbucks worth my time

Signing up to get my items delivered for FREE for 30 days was a great deal.  The ability to earn 130 SB is a double-whammy –  if only I’d known about Swagbucks back then.     You may not think 130 SB is a big deal, however, if you think about all the activities you do online, maybe every action can gain you some SB – joining a membership club, signing up for a mail client, purchasing a theatre ticket.  It is endless.

It is really easy to earn some extra incentives by joining Swagbucks.

Is My Swag Worth The Bucks?

Ok, let’s have a look at the survey side of things.  Let me assume that you enjoy taking surveys.

For a 15 min survey, you can earn 75 SB.  So you will be earning  0.05 pennies per minute.  It’s not much.  No way near the minimum wage!

However, don’t let me put you off.  If you’re cut out for this sort of thing, then go for it.  After all,  it’s a way for you to legitimately earn incentives on the side.

In some cases, you may not want to spend hours completing surveys to earn a few more Swagbucks just so that you can splash out on the likes of Amazon, Walmart or even the Swagbucks reward shop.

Looking at it from the buying side of things.  With categories such as Tickets & Events, Gifts for Kids, Business & Office, there are lots of ways to earn points.  The thing is, with so much choice and incentives, you may become an impulse buyer – just buying things to earn the extra points so you may not be gaining after all.

It’s like being among a crowd of people in a shop and it’s Christmas time.  You see everyone buying an item, not just one, but two at a time and you decide to buy it even though you don’t need it – that’s how our mind works.  If people are getting it, we must get it too.

Another Option For You If You’re More Swag Than Swagbucks

Is Swagbucks worth my timeIf you don’t like the idea of  having to watch the Swagbucks accumulate before you can redeem them for something worthwhile, you might be better off looking for another online opportunity or more creative solution that you can be in control of and where the rewards are much higher for the effort you put in compared to the rewards you receive from taking surveys, receiving cashback or waiting for a swag code.

It’s nice to know you can be earning points by doing something that you normally do but to actively go and find something, like a survey or a game to earn points may not be the best thing to do.   Have you thought about Affiliate Marketing?

With Affiliate Marketing, you are your own boss.  You don’t have to be sitting for hours filling out surveys or playing games to earn a few points.  You can be earning real money by providing information to visitors to your site.  You don’t have to be spending to earn points.

For example, if you like surveys, why not create a website of “best survey sites” and earn an income from the site by referring people to take those surveys?  You really can do this and it’s not difficult to set up.

Don’t get me wrong.  If you like the idea of earning Swagbucks on the side, sign up for a free account.  I’ve signed up and I use the site to complete surveys when I have a spare moment and I use the SwagButton when I am shopping online.

I run my online business alongside my Swagbucks membership.

If you have any questions or comments about SwagBucks or my #1 recommended program please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.

Until next time .. take care!

  1. Wow! I learned a new thing from this post. You are so through explaining what Swagbucks is and how it works. This is something I most surely will look into once I get my website up and popping. This is good information.

    • Hi Rowena,
      Thanks for your comment.
Yes. Please do give Swagbucks a go and let me know you get on.

All the best with your website!
      Jackie

  2. Hi Jacqueline,
You give good information here on Swagbucks. I have tried similar things to this in the past and I just don’t like them. So much time for so little money but in saying that, at least you do get something from them. I think the path of Affiliate marketing is time better spent. Thanks for a thorough look into this program and glad it is working well for you.

    • Hi Sharon,
Thanks for your comment. I agree. Sites like these aren’t to everyone’s liking because of the effort required to earn a few bucks. Affiliate Marketing is the way forward to earn those big bucks with minimum effort, once you have set a solid foundation.

Wishing you success with your online business.

  3. I like Swagbucks, though as you say, you can’t really make a full time income from it.

I’m not a big fan of the surveys though I understand it can be a good thing if you have some down time and won’t be doing anything anyway. I do like the earning for shopping online since I’m doing that anyway. The videos take way too much time and pay very little, so I don’t bother with those.

All in all, it’s good to get paid for activities you will be doing anyway, so I agree that Swagbucks is a good option.

    • Hi Andy,
      Thanks for stopping by.
I do the odd survey now and then as it can help with market research which can only be a good thing. I’m not really big on the video side though as it takes a lot of time and I’m also conscious of the bandwidth required when watching these on my low spec smartphone!
I use it for when I shop online. Why not? When I can earn a few bucks while doing something I normally do.

      Happy swagbucking!

  4. I have used Swagbucks for a few years now, off and on. While I never fully got into it, I still would take surveys every now and then to receive Amazon giftcards.

Thanks for your honest opinion! You were very neutral throughout and I agreed with everything you had to say about Swagbucks. The conclusion really hit the nail on the head. You were very specific about the target audience and I really appreciated that.

    • Hi Joe,

Thanks for your comment.  That’s the great thing about Swagbucks.  You don’t have to be doing it full-time and there’s no expiry date – when you have a spare moment or so you can take a survey or two and before you know it, you have earned enough points for a giftcard.

Yes. Swagbucks isn’t for everyone.  There are other options for those who are looking for a much higher return for less effort.

      All the best.

  5. Swagbucks has been around for many years now and there’s a good reason why they’ve held such a solid reputation, because they are legit and they pay as promised. However, I’m not a big fan of making pennies, I want the big dollars. Thanks for your recommendation, I’ll be checking it out!

    • Hey Brandon,
Yes. Swwagbucks is in its 13th year. It has recently grown momentum -not sure why as the number of subscribers has grown exponentially.
Yes it pays pennies, but extra pennies for doing nothing – just shop and earn by using their SwagButton.

However, it’s not for everyone and most people want a solution where they can be in control of the level of income they will earn.
Please feel free to check out my #1 recommendation.

      All the best!

  6. Thanks for the interesting and informative article Jackie. I have seen this program before and I may be the ‘odd man’ out on this one but I think I would prefer to look at your Affiliate information. I found that altho’ it is free and easy to sign up, Swagbucks is can be very time-consuming and gosh, it looks like you would have to do a lot before getting any real $. Is Affiliate marketing hard to get started?

    • Hi Merry,
If you’re looking to make any real $ with Swagbucks, you’ll have to live, breathe and eat Swagbucks lol.

Affiliate Marketing isn’t hard to get started. Check out my Beginners Guide To Affiliate Marketing here

      All the best!

  7. Wow, what an in depth review of swagbucks. It’s certainly changed since I first stumbled across it many years ago –
seems much more comprehensive now. It would be worth considering for those with spare time who fancy some rewards.

  8. I have heard of this before but never really understand what it was. Thanks for sharing this. I have learned a lot about this. I find it very interesting. I will be checking into this.
I like the part were you said “its free”. Can’t go wrong there.
    Thanks again for sharing.

    • Thanks for stopping by Norman.
Many people do not understand Swagbucks fully. I was sceptical about it but decided to look into it further. I’m glad I did as I can take advantage of it whilst working on your computer.

      Best wishes.

  9. Hi Jacqueline,

Swagbucks is an interesting website. It is a nice option for those who want to make some extra money by spending some minutes per day or week online.

However, I prefer to look for opportunities for a full-time income. In my opinion, if you are online two hours per day or more, there are better opportunities than Swagbucks.

    • Hi ilias,
      Thanks for stopping by.
Swagbucks is something that you can have running in the background without having to think about it. Who doesn’t want to earn a couple of bucks by searching the internet? However, the big bucks can be found in completing surveys so yes, it’s not for everyone.
I have given another option as I know some people will prefer to invest their time in their own business and Wealthy Affiliate is an alternative or it can run alongside Swagbucks which is what I do.
Wishing you success with your online journey.

  10. Wow Jacqueline, what a comprehensive review. I attempted to sign up for Swagbucks a few years ago but somehow couldn’t work out what to do next.
I am particularly interested in the Amazon Prime 30 Day Trial you mentioned. You’ve inspired me to give it another go. Just one question – are there any country restrictions? I live in South Africa. I seem to recall that may have been the snag first time around.

  11. Hello, Jacqueline,

I must say it is a very informative review, as I read a couple of reviews on Swagbucks before. Yours had actual screenshots of the app which makes me believe you actually tried it out. Your explanations were very detailed as well. It is too bad that the app is not actually available in my country 🙁

P.S. I loved the line ‘if you more swag than swagbucks’, but I was a bit confused about the transition to WA as it seems like it appeared out of thin air… But it’s just my opinion 🙂

    Good luck to You 🙂

    • Hi Austeja,
      Thanks for your comment.
Where do you live? Maybe the logistics of introducing Swagbucks on a wider scale requires a lot more involvement.

Wealthy Affiliate is an alternative option if people are not cut-out for signing up to Swagbucks and prefer something that they can own and call their own.
I use SwagBucks and I’m also a member of Wealthy Affiliate and they both work well for me.

      Wishing you success too!
