Working for yourself online at home is very rewarding. However, it’s not a walk in the park – the level of energy and effort you put into your business will mean either success or failure.
Many people start out thinking to work for yourself means an easy way out of the 9-5 work life – this isn’t quite the case. There will be times when you will have to start work BEFORE 9 and finish later than 5. Are you willing to do this? Then read on.
My 1st “Working for Myself” experience
Before I went on maternity leave, a work colleague of mine recommended me to a Travel Agency that needed a bespoke online system created for their business. This was many years ago. With just ONE client, I had enough work to keep me going for some time. It was rewarding to know that the amount of time and effort I was giving to my business, I was beginning to see positive results. It certainly wasn’t an easy feat having to juggle family time, commitments and deadlines but I managed this. Why? Because it was my business, I wanted to see it succeed, I was confident that I could deliver a working solution for my client and I was passionate about what I was doing.
What is great about working for yourself these days is that you can do so from the comfort of your home. When I was working for myself during my maternity leave, I had to physically go and visit my client, install software, train users, get involved in the networking of the system etc. These days, all you need is access to a computer and a WiFi connection. Yes, that’s all!!
Why (not) work for yourself?
The number one reason why most people want to work for themselves is that they want to be their own boss. They like the idea that they can choose their own working hours, they can take holidays when they choose to, they get to spend more time with family and friends, they are passionate about something that they want to share and in so doing, they get to fulfill what they’ve always wanted to do without any restrictions.
In all my 27 years of working for a company, I have enjoyed 6 years where I can say that I truly enjoyed doing what I was doing and felt rewarded. These were the days when appraisals and one-to-one with your boss meant something. It wasn’t just a tick box exercise to say that we had met for the hour. You actually felt that by going the extra mile, you will be rewarded whether it’ll be a pay increase or a promotion. This was back in the early 90s. Since then, I have seen many people leaving the corporate world to work for themselves.
On the flip side of things, the number one reason why people don’t want to work for themselves is for fear of failing. When you’re working for an employer, you are certain of a paycheck at the end of the month. You don’t have to worry about that. You turn up for the work, you get paid. Working for yourself, if you are not successful, there will be no money coming in at the end of the month and you have bills to pay!!
I believe you are here on this website as you have no fear of failing and would like to know about working for yourself online at home.
What Makes Working For Yourself Online At Home A Success?
OK. So most of us have heard of Bill Gates. The inventor of the internet. Bill was drinking coke and eating pizza in his room with a friend when the idea of the internet came to him. What ideas come to you when you’re eating pizza and drinking coke or wandering down the street? You see all it takes is an idea and running with it.
These are some of Bill Gates Rules for Success
- Work Hard
- Enjoy what you do
- Play Bridge/Pool/Dominoes
- Ask for advice
- Don’t procrastinate
When working for yourself, you can be successful. It does take hard work, sometimes sleepless nights, long days but the rewards outweigh them. This is why I don’t believe in these get rich quick schemes that say you can earn $1 million in a month by just signing up for some program. If it were so easy, why aren’t we all millionaires? What makes working for yourself a success is the amount of effort you invest in your business.
If you invest in your business by giving your time and energy to it, you will certainly reap the reward. It may not happen immediately but this is true for any business whether online or your typical brick and mortar business. We all start from nothing and build as we go along gaining momentum as we do so.
Steps to take when thinking of working for yourself
What is it you want to do online? Do you want to market your passion? Maybe you want to inform people about products? Or maybe you want to provide a service. Whatever the reason, think of this as a long-term project. Something that you are interested in. Something that you are passionate about and that will make you jump up early on a cold and dark January morning to meet a deadline for an article.
Diary of Work schedule
Set aside time each day to work on your business.
There will always be some form of admin such as answering emails, responding to customers, updating your website etc. You need to leave time for these things.
Be professional about it
Just because you are working for yourself doesn’t mean that you can now act unprofessionally because you think you are not accountable to anyone but yourself. In fact, you will be accountable to your customers so you will need to gain respect from them through what you do online. You still need to treat your customers with respect – they may not be customers you see face-to-face but they are still your customers so you need to deal with them as if you were sitting in the same office as them. When you gain the respect of one customer, this could lead to the next customer and the next.
Now that you are your own boss, doesn’t mean you can’t take a break. You are entitled to time off and you should take some time out. I find that when I’m working 24/7 on my site, my mind goes blank. When I take time out, I feel inspired and return with better ideas and my thoughts start to flow naturally.
You will more likely be working from your home when you start out. There will be distractions such as the phone ringing, the temptation to watch TV, the radio, visitors etc. However, you need to stay focused as if you were in an actual office setting among other employees, otherwise, these distractions can cost you time and time means money especially now that you are working for yourself.
Set up your office area where it is quiet and free from distractions as much as possible. The area should be light and airy and have the necessary equipment so that you don’t have to leave to get items needed to carry out your work.
The whole idea of being your own boss and working for yourself is that you will be able to work from ANY location so there will come a time when you might end up working on a beach, in a pub, car park or somewhere where there will be distractions. You will probably be on a well-earned break and will just be catching up on emails and doing other administrative tasks which don’t necessarily warrant you being in a quiet area. This is fine.

Let’s get started!!
You can set up your website and write blogs about your interest or even create an e-book about your passion and use this as a means to generate revenue. So if you’re interested in cooking for children with special dietary needs, you can join programs that sell products for these needs. Each product sold through your site will generate commission for you.
One of the benefits of being an Affiliate Marketer is that you do not have to purchase any stock or deal with customers on any level, the companies you promote will do all this for you unless you are promoting your own product which you will presumably stock.
